Issue 1: Missing form labels

What goes wrong
WooCommerce checkout fields often have placeholder text but no actual <label> elements. Placeholder text vanishes when you start typing. Screen reader users hear “edit text” with zero context about what field they’re filling in.

The role="alert" on the container makes screen readers announce the error immediately. The aria-describedby on the input tells the screen reader to repeat the error when the user tabs back to that field.
Don’t just use color. Add an icon or text prefix like “Error:” so color-blind users can identify the problem too.
This next one is the big one. It’s where you lose the most money.
Issue 3: Payment widget keyboard traps
This is the issue that costs you the most money. A customer fills out their shipping info, enters their payment details, and then gets stuck. The PayPal button won’t focus. The Stripe card input is trapped. Apple Pay is unreachable by keyboard.
What goes wrong
Payment gateways like PayPal, Stripe, and Apple Pay inject their own widgets into your checkout. These widgets are often iframes or shadow DOM elements that don’t follow standard keyboard navigation patterns.
Common traps:
- PayPal buttons rendered as iframes that steal focus with no way to exit
- Stripe card inputs inside iframes that don’t receive focus when the user tabs to them
- Apple Pay buttons that appear but can’t be activated with the Enter key
- Credit card fields that trap keyboard users in an infinite tab cycle
A keyboard user hitting one of these traps has three options: abandon the cart, switch to mouse, or use browser hacks. Two of those three mean lost sales.
How to fix it
This one is trickier because payment widgets are controlled by the gateway, not your theme. But you can still fix it:
- Test each payment method with keyboard only. Tab through the entire checkout without touching your mouse.
- Add focus styles to payment iframes so keyboard users can see where they are:

The box-shadow creates a white gap between the outline and the element, making it visible on both light and dark backgrounds. The outline-offset ensures the outline doesn’t touch the element border.

Issue 5: Skip-to-content and navigation order problems
Can a keyboard user jump straight to the checkout form, or do they have to tab through your entire header, menu, and sidebar first?
What goes wrong
Many WooCommerce stores have:
- Long navigation menus that keyboard users must tab through before reaching checkout
- No skip-to-content link
- Form fields in a different order than they appear visually
- Related information (like shipping costs) placed outside the tab order
This wastes time and creates confusion. A keyboard user who has to tab through 47 links in your header before reaching the checkout form isn’t going to complete the purchase.
How to fix it

Also verify that your checkout fields follow a logical tab order. The visual order should match the DOM order. If you rearranged fields with CSS (grid or flexbox), the keyboard tab order might not match.
How to test your checkout in 15 minutes
You don’t need expensive tools to catch these issues. Here’s a quick test anyone can do.
Minutes 1-5: Keyboard test
- Unplug your mouse
- Go to your checkout page
- Press Tab to move through every field
- Press Shift+Tab to go backward
- Try to submit the form with Enter
- Watch for: invisible focus, trapped keyboard, broken tab order
