WooCommerce Bulk Edit Not Working? Here’s Why (And How to Fix It)
You select 300 products, change the price field, hit apply, and nothing happens. Or it starts and then stops partway through. Or it says it worked but nothing changed. This is the experience most store owners describe when they say “bulk edit isn’t working” — and there are at least six distinct reasons this happens.
1. PHP Memory Limit
The most common culprit. Bulk editing requires PHP to load all affected products into memory at once. If you have 500+ variable products with 10+ variations each, that’s potentially thousands of post records plus metadata. WooCommerce’s default memory allocation (64MB) isn’t enough.
Fix: Add this to your wp-config.php:
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');
For large stores (1000+ products), 512M is more realistic.
2. Max Execution Time
PHP scripts have a time limit — usually 30 seconds. A bulk edit touching 200 products with complex metadata can easily exceed this. The script dies mid-process, leaving your data half-updated.
Fix: Increase the timeout in wp-config.php:
set_time_limit(300); // 5 minutes
Or ask your host to increase max_execution_time on the server level.
3. Conflicting Plugins
A security plugin, caching layer, or another WooCommerce extension that hooks into post.php or admin_post_ can intercept or block bulk actions. This is especially common with plugins that add their own bulk action dropdowns.
How to diagnose: Deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and your bulk editor, then test. If bulk edit works, reactivate plugins one by one until you find the conflict.
4. Corrupted Product Metadata
Products edited directly in the database — via SQL, CSV imports, or other tools — sometimes end up with malformed metadata. WooCommerce expects specific data types and formats. When these are off, bulk operations either skip the product silently or throw a fatal error.
Signs: Bulk edit reports “X products updated” but the count doesn’t match. Or specific products never respond to bulk operations.
Fix: Use a plugin that validates and repairs metadata, or run a database check on wp_postmeta for orphaned or malformed entries.
5. AJAX vs. Direct Post
WooCommerce’s native bulk actions use admin-post.php — a direct POST request. If your server is behind a proxy, load balancer, or aggressive CDN, the request body might get truncated or rewritten.
Fix: Check your server’s max_post_size and post_max_size settings. They should be at least 64M for bulk operations.
6. Permissions and Roles
Some store setups use custom user roles or permission plugins that strip the edit_products capability from shop managers. Bulk edit requires this capability. If it’s missing, the action silently fails for non-admin users.
When None of These Apply
If you’ve exhausted all of the above and bulk edit is still unreliable, the issue is probably in the tool itself. Native WooCommerce bulk edit has no preview, no undo, and no logging. It applies changes directly to the database. The first step is always diagnosing correctly. Random “try this plugin” advice without understanding why it failed is how stores end up with data corruption and hours of cleanup work.
