Your Shopify App Is Quietly Breaking WCAG Compliance. Here’s How to Find It

Your accessibility-certified theme passed an audit. Then you installed 5 more apps. Now you’re failing again. Here’s why.

Why Your Theme Passes But Your Store Still Fails

Most Shopify themes ship clean. The popular ones from the Shopify Theme Store have been through accessibility reviews, and the markup that loads with the page is usually fine on first paint. The audit report is real. The certificate is real. None of that protects you once apps start injecting their own code into the page.

Shopify apps work in a few ways that bypass whatever your theme does well. Some inject Liquid snippets into theme files during install. Others load script tags that run after the DOM is ready and then mutate it. A few use the Shopify App Bridge or App Embed blocks to render UI inside the storefront without touching theme code at all. The result is the same. Markup that did not exist when your auditor scanned the page now exists when a real customer loads it.

Automated scanners run at a moment in time. If the scan happens during a clean staging build with no apps active, or before the chat widget loads, or while the popup is still on its 3-second delay, the violations are invisible. They are still there. The scanner just did not see them.

This is why stores that paid for an audit in March can fail again in May without changing a single line of theme code.

The 5 App Categories That Violate WCAG Most Often

These are the categories I run into again and again on real Shopify stores.

  1. Chat widgets and live chat tools. The chat bubble is almost always a keyboard trap. Tab into it and you cannot tab out. Open the chat panel and focus does not move into it, so screen reader users have no idea it appeared. The close button is often an icon font with no accessible name.

  2. Review and star-rating tools. Star ratings render as decorative images or icon fonts without empty alt attributes, so screen readers announce “image image image image image” instead of “4 out of 5 stars”. Some review apps inject thousands of these per page on collection views.

  3. Exit-intent and promo popups. These are modals that are not really modals. No focus trap, no aria-modal, no return-focus-on-close. Keyboard users tab right past the popup into the page underneath. Screen reader users never hear the popup announce itself at all.

  4. Email capture overlays. Form fields without labels are the standard violation here. Placeholder text is not a label. Many of these overlays also auto-play background animation that runs longer than 5 seconds with no pause control, which is a 2.2.2 failure on its own.

  5. Product upsell and cross-sell bars. Link text reads “Add” or “Buy now” with no surrounding context, so a screen reader user gets a list of 12 “Add” links and no way to know what they are adding. Contrast failures on the badge text are also routine, especially the orange-on-white discount tags.

None of this is malicious. The vendors are shipping fast and accessibility is a backlog item. That does not help you when your store is the one getting the demand letter.

How to Find Which Apps Are Causing Violations

Step 1. Run a scan with all apps active, then run another scan with most apps disabled. Binary elimination is faster than it sounds. Disable half your apps, scan, see which violations disappear. Whichever half cleared the violations contained the culprit. Disable half of that half, scan again. You can isolate the problem app in 4 or 5 rounds even on stores with 30+ apps.

Do this on a duplicate of your live theme so customers do not see the apps blink in and out.

Step 2. Check the vendor’s own demo store. Most Shopify apps have a public demo. Run the same scanner against the demo. If their own showcase store has the violation, you have your answer about whether the app itself is the source. You also have a screenshot to send when you open a support ticket.

Step 3. Read the app changelog. Search for “a11y”, “accessibility”, “WCAG”, “ARIA”, “keyboard”, “screen reader”. Vendors that take this seriously mention it in release notes. Vendors that do not have not. The app listing in the Shopify App Store also has a “Last updated” date. If the app has not shipped in 18 months, it is unlikely to be patching anything.

What to Do After You Identify the Problem App

Contact the vendor first. Send the violation, the WCAG success criterion it fails, the URL where you reproduced it, and a screenshot. Ask for a remediation timeline in writing. Reasonable vendors will give you one. Unreasonable vendors will give you a generic reply about how accessibility is important to them. The reply you get is itself the answer about whether to keep using the app.

If a fix is coming but not soon, version-pin. Some apps let you stay on a known-good version while they iterate. Snapshot your current setup so a silent update does not undo your work.

If no fix is coming, replace the app. There is almost always an accessible alternative in the same category, and switching is cheaper than litigation. The European Accessibility Act took effect in June 2025, and demand letters for non-compliant ecommerce sites are no longer rare in the US either.

How to Monitor App Accessibility After Each Update

Apps update silently. The vendor pushes a new version, your store loads it on the next page view, and any accessibility work the previous version had can be gone. There is no changelog popup, no email, no warning. Your store just starts failing again.

A one-time audit cannot catch this. Continuous monitoring can. Run scans on a schedule, diff the results, and alert when a new violation appears that was not there yesterday. That is the difference between catching a regression in a day and finding out about it from a customer complaint in a quarter.
