Here’s what most Shopify merchants miss: the EAA doesn’t care where your business is registered. If you ship products to consumers in the EU, take payment from EU customers, or even just market to them in their native language, you fall within scope. - Alt text on every product image. Not “image1.jpg.” Describe the product in context. Decorative images should have empty alt attributes (
alt=""), not missing ones. - Keyboard navigation works end-to-end. Use Tab to move from product page → add to cart → checkout → payment. If any step traps focus or skips elements, fix it.
- Visible focus indicators. Many Shopify themes strip the default browser outline with
outline: none. Add it back with a clear, high-contrast focus ring. - Color contrast meets 4.5:1 for body text. Sale tags, button text, and discount banners are the usual offenders. Check the small grey text on white backgrounds first.
- Form fields have proper labels. Every input on the checkout, contact, and account pages needs a
<label>associated with it. Placeholder text alone is not a label. - Error messages are announced. When a customer enters an invalid email at checkout, screen readers must hear it. Use

- Publish an accessibility statement. The EAA explicitly requires one, listing your conformance level, known issues, and a contact for accessibility complaints.
